HUMANS OF CHINATOWN

HUMANS OF CHINATOWN, was a portrait & interview series that collected stories answering the question, “What makes Chinatown important to you?” HUMANS OF CHINATOWN happened 2 times, in collaboration with A-VOYCE’s SaturPLAY event at Mary Soo Hoo Park on the Greenway and in collaboration with Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC) at the Hudson Street Stoop Dancing Dragon opening event in the fall of 2023. Participants were invited to get a portrait taken by Mel Taing and then be interviewed afterwards.

The goal of HUMANS OF CHINATOWN was to engage with Chinatown community through an arts-based offering and help surface the needs, questions, and assets that need to be preserved for future generations.

HUMANS OF CHINATOWN was created by artist team, Mel Taing, Heang Rubin and Lily Xie for the Chinatown Cultural Plan. The Chinatown Cultural Plan has a Working Group comprised of ACDC, Chinatown Community Land Trust, Pao Arts Center and Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. The plan will be anchored by a collective vision that identifies the culture, history and heritage of Boston Chinatown with a policy agenda that links to the 2020 Master Plan’s goals for housing, mobility, health, environmental justice and open space. The Cultural Plan will include an updated inventory of the neighborhood’s cultural assets and strategies to preserve and expand cultural and artistic vitality in Chinatown.
